Louisiana Spring Allergens

It's Spring in Louisiana!

With warmer weather comes the promise of trees, grasses, flowers in full bloom – and allergies. For people who suffer from seasonal allergies, the beauty and enjoyment of spring can be clouded by symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezing or coughing, congestion, and an overall fatigue that seems to be in direct opposition to the new life emerging all around.

What triggers spring allergies?

In the Baton Rouge area, some allergic symptoms are caused by our beloved cypress, oak, elm, and maple trees. Tree pollination starts in late winter and continues well into spring, with each tree species releasing pollen at different times. By adding poplar, hickory, birch, and pine trees to our list of pollen-bearing, sneeze-triggering offenders, it’s no wonder allergic symptoms can seem unending. Weeds and grasses such as ryegrass, timothy grass, blue grass, fleabane, the hairy buttercup, and thistle only add to the allergic fog.

How are spring allergies treated?

Some people find temporary relief from seasonal allergies with a nasal sinus rinse. Options for nasal “cleansing” or “irrigation” products have increased, but whatever you use, please be sure to follow the directions. Misuse of sinus rinses can lead to dangerous infections.

Over-the-counter medications can offer temporary relief, but the side effects aren’t always better than the symptoms they’re supposed to be alleviating. And while many folktales suggest that local honey or specific oils or aromatherapies can help, science has yet to prove them worthwhile. If your allergies are causing you to miss work or school or making it hard to get outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun, consider seeing us.
