How allergic are YOU?

Allergens are substances that cause allergic reactions. When you have an allergic reaction to something, it is your body's response to a substance that many other people can probably easily tolerate. If you are highly sensitive to a particular allergen (your allergic threshold is "low"), you will have symptoms every time you are exposed to it. If you are only slightly allergic to a substance (your allergic threshold is "high"), it will take a higher concentration of that allergen to trigger your symptoms because you are not very sensitive to it.

Small amounts of a variety of allergens can overload your threshold as can a large amount of a single allergen. It is the total accumulation of allergen exposure that will determine if your tolerance is exceeded. So your doctor will recommend that you try hard to avoid substances to which you have a high or low threshold.

The Goal of Allergen Avoidance

It is important to know the particular allergens to which you are sensitive. You can then concentrate on those steps which are most practical and those which are most effective at reducing your exposure. An appropriate allergen avoidance program recommended by your doctor will help you set priorities and make informed choices about how you will best avoid an overload of the substances to which you are allergic.
